Hinge Studio was selected by Washington State Parks to design a replacement comfort facility at the Fort Ebey State Park Campground. The existing structure was typical of its era, a simple CMU box divided in half, assigned a gender, and provided with basic facilities in each. While it served its purpose, times have changed and with it, the design approach. Hinge Studio looked to the beautiful natural features surrounding Fort Ebey as well as the historic, vernacular designs of the Pacific Northwest tribes native to this area for our initial design inspiration. The new design will include 5 individual toilet rooms and 4 individual shower rooms, all private, heated, and gender neutral. The new facility will sit on roughly the same footprint as the existing to avoid unnecessary disturbance or damage to the root system of the towering Douglas Firs surrounding it. The new facility will include a guest kiosk, a little free library, a covered waiting area for guests, improved parking, and improved accessible routes from the two nearby ADA campsites. This project is currently in the design and permitting phase with construction expected to begin in Fall of 2025.
