Our Vodka Distillery in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood is a project that required major seismic upgrades to its existing single-story masonry structure. Addressing these challenges, Hinge Studio proposed to unearth the building’s original bare bones and was able to utilize the original beautifully preserved steel and brick. Additionally, the design called to address the distillery’s high hazard classification (H) for alcohol production and storage, and intense fire safety requirements. Despite these technical considerations behind the scenes, the retail section connects to the production facility through a viewing window, and also connects to its built streetscape through an open storefront. Finishes and details in the retail section invite visitors to drop in for tastings and purchasing wares. Tables, shelving, and casework constructed from old growth wood salvaged during the project’s demolition, charming wall-mounted planters, and clean lines exemplify this warm and inviting experience.
